Telekom Markalarının Haber İtibarı: Turkcell, Türk Telekom, VodafoneNews Reputation of Turkey's Telecom Brands: Turkcell, Türk Telekom, Vodafone

Türk Telekom'un olumsuz haberlerinin yarısı her yaz gelen zam duyuruları, Turkcell'inki tek bir kesinti gününde yoğunlaşıyor; Turkcell'in yüksek görünen tonunun bir kısmı ise kendi yayınlarından geliyor.I labelled 3,004 Google News headlines from two years by topic and tone. Half of Türk Telekom's negative news is the price rise announced every summer, Turkcell's clusters around a single outage day, and part of Turkcell's high tone comes from its own publications.

Soru

Sosyal dinleme raporlarında itibar genellikle sosyal medya üzerinden ölçülür. Ama bir markanın kamuoyundaki hikâyesini büyük ölçüde haber başlıkları kurar: tarifeye zam, şebeke kesintisi, yeni CEO, 5G hazırlığı. Bu çalışmada Türkiye'nin üç mobil operatörünün iki yıllık haber başlıklarına baktım ve üç soru sordum: Hangi marka hangi konularla haber oluyor, haberlerin tonu nasıl, ve olumsuz haberler nereden geliyor?

Veri ve yöntem

  1. Toplama: Google News'ün RSS aramasında her marka için ayrı ayrı, Ekim 2023 – Eylül 2025 arasındaki her ay bir sorgu (Turkcell after:2024-03-01 before:2024-04-01 gibi). 72 sorgudan 3.004 başlık geldi.

Onlar çıkarıldığında Turkcell'in net tonu +27'den +19'a iniyor ve Türk Telekom'a yaklaşıyor.

Turkcell'in kesinti çeyreği (2025'in 2.

The question

Social listening reports usually measure reputation through social media. But much of a brand's public story is written by news headlines: a price rise, a network outage, a new CEO, 5G plans. Here I looked at two years of headlines about Turkey's three mobile operators and asked three questions: which topics put each brand in the news, what is the tone, and where does the negative coverage come from?

Data and method

  1. Collection: one Google News RSS search per brand per month from October 2023 to September 2025 (e.g. Turkcell after:2024-03-01 before:2024-04-01). The 72 queries returned 3,004 headlines.
  2. Cleaning: the same headline can come back from more than one query, so I de-duplicated on headline text (2,765 headlines). I then kept only stories whose headline names the brand or a sub-brand (Superonline, TV+, Tivibu, Selfy, Freezone…). The rest mention the brand only in the body, such as match reports or market bulletins.
  3. Source type: stories from a brand's own channel (e.g. medya.turkcell.com.tr) were tagged owned media, everything else independent press.
  4. Topic and tone: each headline got one of nine topics and a positive / neutral / negative tone from Turkish keyword patterns. Sports results count as neutral for the brand; a team winning a match does not change the operator's reputation.
  5. Validation: I tuned the patterns against hand labels on a 150-headline development sample, then tested them on a second 150 headlines I had not seen. The accuracy on this page is from that second sample.

One caveat matters: Google News does not return every story of a month, only the ones it ranks as most relevant (25–90 headlines a month here). So I did not compare news volume or share of voice; I compared the content of each brand's visible coverage.

Each brand's news tone

Net tone is the share of positive headlines minus the share of negative ones (from −100 to +100). All three brands' coverage is mostly neutral or positive; the differences are in how much negative news there is and where it comes from.

Türk Telekom60010%+16+16
Vodafone3116%+32+32

n: stories naming the brand in the headline. * Net tone after removing its own publications.

29% of Turkcell's query results come from the company's own news sites, and those stories are naturally positive (net +50). Without them Turkcell's net tone drops from +27 to +19, close to Türk Telekom. Türk Telekom's and Vodafone's own channels barely appear in Google News. When reporting a brand's news tone, separating its own publications is therefore a necessary step.

Only 41% of Vodafone's query results name the brand in the headline. Most of the rest are volleyball (the Vodafone Sultanlar League) and football (Beşiktaş's stadium) stories; the name is visible thanks to sponsorship, but the story is not about Vodafone.

For all three brands the largest topic is products, tariffs and offers, followed by technology and network (5G plans, fibre, data centres). Technology is the most positive topic: net tone +72 for Turkcell, +65 for Vodafone and +55 for Türk Telekom.

The real difference is the tone of product and tariff news. The topic is positive for Turkcell (+40) and Vodafone (+35) but slightly below neutral for Türk Telekom (−1.8). The next section shows why.

Counts within the sample Google News returns; they show concentration, not volume.

30 of Türk Telekom's 58 negative headlines are about price rises, and they follow a calendar. The company announced internet price rises effective 1 July in June 2024 and again in June 2025; in August 2025 came the news that the regulator BTK allowed two wholesale price rises a year. Because Türk Telekom owns most of the fixed infrastructure, other providers' price rises also make headlines under its name.

Turkcell's negative news clusters around two events. In October 2024 a special tariff for members of parliament came to light and drew criticism; 6 of that month's 8 negative headlines are about it. April 2025 is the most intense month in the period: 11 of its 15 negative headlines concern the network outage on 9 April, the rest are stories such as the NetGSM lawsuit that landed the same days. The outage coverage includes the company's statement and apology, and the compensation package for users was announced the next day, so crisis communication started on the same day.

Vodafone has the least negative news (17 headlines) and no clear cluster. Part of this is simply less coverage: the number of stories naming it in the headline is about half that of the other two brands.

Net tone by quarter

Net tone, quarterly
0+20+40+60
Q4 23Q2 24Q4 24Q3 25

The Turkcell series includes its own publications. 30–110 headlines per quarter; small quarter-to-quarter differences may be noise.

Türk Telekom's weakest quarters are Q2 2024 (+3.7), when the price rise was announced, and Q4 2024 (+7.5), when outage and price-rise stories coincided. Turkcell's outage quarter (Q2 2025) falls to +20, from +49 the quarter before.

How reliable are the tone labels?

Hand ↓ / Rules →NegativeNeutralPositive
Negative1660
Neutral1658
Positive01737

The rules agree with the hand label on 79% of these headlines (Cohen's κ = 0.64). 94% of the headlines they call negative really are negative, but they catch only 73% of negative headlines. The misses are usually criticism without a keyword, such as “there are irregularities” or “the row spread to Türk Telekom”. So the negative shares are slightly understated. In aggregate the rules hold up: in this sample net tone is +21.3 by hand and +18.7 by rules.

What can a brand team do with this?

  • Predictable bad news can be planned for. Half of Türk Telekom's negative coverage is price-rise news that arrives at the same time each year. A communication plan that explains the rise alongside investment and speed improvements can be put on the same calendar.
  • An outage decides a month's reputation. Turkcell's worst month in two years was a single outage day. Because the statement and compensation came quickly, the impact stayed within one quarter; a ready response playbook for such events pays off.
  • Separate your own publications. Owned media raises Turkcell's news tone by 8 points. Comparisons with competitors should use independent press only.
  • Sponsorship visibility is not brand news. Vodafone's name appears most in sports stories, which add little to reputation. When measuring visibility, stories where the brand is the subject should be tracked separately.

Limitations

  • Google News returns a sample; news volume and share of voice cannot be measured with this data.
  • Only headlines were read. A story that looks neutral in its headline may be critical in its body.
  • Tone and topic come from keyword rules, which can miss irony and context. Accuracy was measured against one person's hand labels.
  • Social media, complaint sites and comments are outside this study; it covers the news side of reputation, not all of it.
